Today we had our readathon and finished our practice theme paragraph from Elie Wiesel's speech, "Hope, Despair, Memory." If you missed the readathon or didn't get any points, you can make it up by reading for an hour at home on your own and taking two selfies by your reading spot--one at the beginning of the hour and one at the end of the hour--and emailing it to me. You can also post it to Twitter, if you have a Twitter account, to my account @Grrr22.

Today we did DOL 9 and reviewed the summary and theme strategies. Then, I taught the 3X Strategy and discussed how it will apply to your book review. Your writer's notebooks were notes on all three strategies. Then, I passed back the Lance Armstrong assignments and you were supposed to write a paragraph about a theme in the story. Remember to bring your reading books and food next time for the readathon.
Today we did DOL 6 and analyzed 3 different texts about what the authors said about living and dying in them. Attached are the three texts we analyzed. We will look at the last two texts next class period.
Today we did DOL 5 and I made sure that everybody in class has their book they proposed for Term 2. I took students to the library that didn't have their book even if they said that they were getting it to make sure that you no longer lose any points for reading time. Then, we spent the last half of class reading a story about Lance Armstrong finding out he has cancer and discussed our reactions to his story and what happened. We didn't turn the story in yet because we are going to do something with it next time.
Today we did a DOL and then wrote a writer's notebook about how important it is to be busy and productive. We discussed how a person would benefit from leading a really productive life versus unproductive and then I presented to the class the idea that each of you should be working towards being able to apply for the Sterling Scholar Award your senior year. I talked about what to do and what you need to start gathering in order to apply. Finally, we finished the goal posters and turned them in.
Today we finished discussing the Road Not Taken and talked about some of your answers as a class. Then, we did a goal poster where we chose 8-10 pics to represent goals that each of you have that you'd like to accomplish in the next year. Your goal poster is due finished next time.
Happy Halloween! Today we had our first book check of the term. I passed back your book proposals and told the class to make sure that they got their books asap. We did DOL 2.1 and discussed the importance of taking advantage of each day. At the end of class, we did a writer's notebook about specific short and long term goals that each of you have that you would like to accomplish. Then, I showed a TED talk about a guy that does 30 day challenges and I assigned the class to pick something from your list of goals that you would like to accomplish and set a due date for November 30th. You will write a response paper and presented what you did on that day. |
