Today we got our whole class novels for 3rd Term and proposed ideas for our poems and turned those ideas in on a separate sheet of paper as a writer's notebook. English 11 Honors attempted writing the first stanza of their Slam Poems. English 11 proposed their best idea for their single story poem. Halfway through class, we started the anticipation guide and began discussing in tales our ideas.

Today we wrote a summary and critique of our Term 3 book. Make sure that if you missed that you come in during flex to get the paper and do the book report. You can't do take the book report home. We did NOT type our book reports this term; instead, we wrote the book reports and used that opportunity to share our books with our tables.
Today, counselors came in to talk about junior registration for next year. You'll need to get a packet from the counseling office if you missed. We also proposed two ideas for the Slam Poem in our writer's notebooks. Next time is the book report. Make sure that you've finished reading your book.
day 8: Martin Niemoller Writer's Notebook and Holocaust background assignment (January 27 and 28)1/29/2020 For Holocaust Remembrance Day, we discussed Martin Niemoller's poem below and took notes on the Holocaust to prepare to read our book for this term. At the end of class, we turned in our composition books today.
Today we read another speech by Elie Wiesel called Hope, Despair, and Memory and annotated and discussed it. We also watched the TED Talk: The Danger of Willful Blindness and turned in our Textual Analysis Assignment. Make sure that you get Elie's speech from the manila folders near the door and watch the speech below. Today I presented to the class your next writing assignment. Honors is doing a Slam Poem and English 11 Regular is doing a SIngle Story Found Poem. You can find the assignment description in the manila folders by the door. Also, we continued our discussion of main idea and theme by watching the TED Talk "Whitopia" by Rich Benjamin and "Why I think this World Should End" by Prince Ea. Today we read Ayn Rand's essay on sacrifice entitled "The Virtue of Selfishness" and analyzed it using the textual analysis paper. We also annotated it and discussed it at our tables. To end class, we discussed the Great Dictator and watched the clip and analyzed it as well. You'll need to get Ayn Rand's essay out of the manila folders by the wall and annotate it and respond to the questions and then write about the Great Dictator speech below in your notebooks. We discussed the danger of a single story in class today and continued to analyze these texts using the textual analysis handout. We also responded to the clip by writing in our composition books about the following questions: "What is dangerous about the single story? How does the single story rob people of their humanity? What would constitute a balance of stories? How do we reject the single story?" Today we discussed Vista Projects and went over the packet for this term. We'll be studying European and Russian Literature. We also continued to talk about things that are "dangerous" in our society by watching Clint Smith's "The Danger of Silence" and created our own wall of silence in class. You'll need to get the Vista Project packet and respond to the TED Talk below in your composition book for today. Today we read, annotated, and watched the speech, "The Perils of Indifference" by Elie Wiesel. We discussed the speech in tables and as a class and turned in the annotation. We also passed out hall passes for the term and I passed out the textual analysis paper for the first half of this term. You'll need to get the speech to annotate it and the textual analysis paper to begin responding to in the manila folders by the door. |
