Today we had our readathon and finished our practice theme paragraph from Elie Wiesel's speech, "Hope, Despair, Memory." If you missed the readathon or didn't get any points, you can make it up by reading for an hour at home on your own and taking two selfies by your reading spot--one at the beginning of the hour and one at the end of the hour--and emailing it to me. You can also post it to Twitter, if you have a Twitter account, to my account @Grrr22.

Today we turned in our historical research computer lab assignments and did DOL 9 and reviewed the summary and theme strategies. Then, I taught the 3X Strategy and discussed how it will apply to your book review. Your writer's notebooks were notes on all three strategies. Then, I passed back out another speech by Elie Wiesel entitled, "Hope, Despair, and Memory" and you were supposed to write a paragraph about a theme in the speech. Remember to bring your reading books and food next time for the readathon.
Today we talked about how to research your historical events using MLA citation and then went to the lab and started researching your historical events. Whatever students didn't finish in class is homework.
Today we did DOL 7 and talked about the final assignment for this term: a short historical narrative about a historical event from a diverse perspective we've never heard from before. Examples would be telling the story of a teenage girl who was in Pakistan when the US bombed it for 9/11 or the perspective of a Kamikaze pilot attacking World War 2 who DIDN'T want to attack or die the way he did. There are so many untold stories and perspectives. Just choose one from a non-American perspective and research it. Also, we went to the computer lab to research a few different world historical events that might be possible to write about in your narratives. They are due next class period.
Today we did DOL 6 and had another book check. Then, we discussed the merits of writing All the Light We Cannot See from the perspective of a Hitler's Youth and blind French girl. Then, we watched the TED talk: The Danger of a Single Story and I discussed your final project for the term. Here are the questions for the writer's notebook: What is the danger of a single story? What was wrong with the type of books Adichie was reading as a youth? How does the single story rob people of their humanity? How should we see the single story, then? What would constitute a balance of stories? What would that look like? What would different versions of the single story look like? Today, we did DOL 5 and discussed how Hitler oppressed his own people during the Jewish Holocaust. Most people believe that Hitler just made the Jews and other minorities suffer, whereas he even made his own people suffer. We took notes on the Holocaust, which are below and I reminded students to make sure that they get their own book before next time because I'll force those that don't have their own book to go to the library and get one so that you don't lose any more reading points.
Today we did a DOL and talked about the antidote to apathy and indifference. We did a video writer's notebook on apathy and watched a TED talk about it. We also created the wall of silence and shared thoughts about wby people are silent or silenced about things. To end class we started talking about Hitler's youth. TED Talk on The Antidote to Apathy: https://www.ted.com/talks/dave_meslin_the_antidote_to_apathy?language=en Writer’s Notebook: What is the antidote to apathy? Are we all indifferent? Is it dangerous? What did your parents teach you about helping people who are suffering or desperate? How did they show you? What examples have you seen in your life of people who have helped the downtrodden and those “lower” than you?
Today we did DOL 3 and had another book check. Make sure that you start bringing your book if you haven't been already. We watched a TED talk and discussed the dangers of silence in our writer's notebook. I discussed how Elie had imposed a ten year vow of silence after he was liberated in 1945 from Buna and the possible effect it could have had on him. Then, we talked about the perils of indifference and how the two ideas interconnect. Finally, we finished our discussion on indifference and turned in the assignment. |
