Today we started our next round of DOLs, focusing on ACT principles. Right now, we're working on Subject-Verb Agreement. We read All the Light We Cannot See (A1 and A3) and The Book Thief (B7) and took our first quiz for the book. We talked about the reading as a class and then did a class activity to end class (St. Malo Maze in A1 and A3 and Book Thief Prologue Analysis in B7).
Today we wrote our Term 2 Book Report, a thematic analysis of the book. We also checked out our class novels and I passed out the reading schedule for the rest of the term. If you were absent, make sure you catch up in the reading. Quizzes start next time.
Today we read Elie Wiesel's "Hope, Despair, and Memory" and analyzed it. The Writer's Notebook was to respond to the speech and discuss how despair, forgetting the past, and how neglecting things that don't impact us are dangerous. Then, we wrote down the themes, topics, and main idea from the speech.
Today we continued discussing theme, topic, and main idea and wrote a practice paragraph to prepare for the book report. We discussed the book report and reviewed the 3X Strategy. Send me an email for the powerpoint so that you can get the notes you missed and know how to write the practice paragraph.
Today we discussed theme, topic, and main idea and took notes on those concepts. We also practiced vocabulary for the vocab test on Monday the 12th (A) and Tuesday the 13th (B). We turned in our found poems to end class.
Today we discussed the holocaust in depth. Email me for the presentation notes and then jot down some ideas for your found poem. For homework, type your found poem and bring it to class next time.
day 26: The danger of the Single Story and the found poem single story assignment (Nov 1 and 2)11/2/2018 Today we watched the TED Talk "The Danger of a Single Story" and discussed the implications of Chimimanda Adichie's words in our writer's notebooks. The prompt was "What is the single story? Why is it dangerous? Why were the stories Adichie was reading as a young girl dangerous? What would a balance of stories look like? How do we reject the single story?" Afterward, we talked about the Found Poem assignment which adds to the single story.
Today we had a book check and watched the TED Talk "The Danger of Silence" and applied it to our discussion last class about Elie Wiesel remaining silent about his experience in the Nazi Concentration Camps for over 10 years. Afterward, we discussed the dangers of silence in our writer's notebooks and the TED Talk and created the Wall of Silence. See the back board to do the assignment. |
