Today we did DOL 9 on comma rules and took Quiz 3 of First They Killed My Father. We discussed legends and myths and our writer's notebook was brainstorming a list of legends and myths that we know about while watching the clip below. Finally, to end class, we started writing our own urban legend summary using the summary strategy. We will finish next Monday.

Today we talked about the book reports. They need to be submitted by this Friday. Also, we took Quiz 2 of First They Killed My Father and talked about the introduction to the story. We discussed comma rules and did Writer's Notebook #9 on the strange and weird superstitions and traditions that we have and believe in. If On Wednesday, we wrote our book reports for first term and checked out the book First They Killed My Father. I passed out reading schedules and reminded the class that there is a quiz every day on the reading.
On Friday, we took our first quiz and finished the book report in the writing lab. If you were absent, you have until Friday, September 29 to finish your book report in Flex. Day 10: More colon rules, the 3x strategy, and finishing the theme assignment (September 14)9/19/2017 Today we did DOL 7 on more colon rules and discussed thesis statements and how they apply to your book review. We took notes on the 3X strategy for Writer's Notebook #7 and finished the theme group assignment. Come in during flex to learn the 3X strategy.
Today we discussed colon rules and practiced writing summaries and theme statements to prepare for your book review next Wednesday. We watched the following video for the writer's notebook and practiced writing themes statements about it. Today we did another DOL on appositives and turned in the Red Bandanna Summary Assignment. Then, we discussed theme, topic, and main idea in depth and took notes on those concepts for the writer's notebook. Send me an email so that you can get those notes from me by powerpoint. Today we began discussing appositives and did a DOL to show that we understood the concept of appositives in writing. We also discussed the summary strategy that I would like you to use for book reports in this class and took notes and practiced the strategy. Your homework is to write a summary (using the summary strategy I taught in class) to write a summary about Welles Crowther's experiences on September 11 in the video "The Red Bandanna." MAKE SURE THAT YOU EMAIL ME TO GET THE POWERPOINT FOR THE SUMMARY STRATEGY BEFORE YOU WRITE YOUR SUMMARY. Today we did DOL 4 and responded to the video below in our writer's notebooks. Here is the prompt: Writer's Notebook #4: Is Matt Sczcur ethnocentric or not? Argue why or why not using evidence from the clip. At the end of the clip, Matt meets the family that he donated his bone marrow to. Does he make a connection with them? Who deep of an emotional connection was it for them and him? Also, I showed the class an example of a Vista Project. We talked about what your Vista Project cultural presentation should look like and discussed what you should prepare for in lieu of your project presentation coming up later this month. Happy three-day weekend everybody! We're going tubing on Willard Bay and watching the BYU-LSU game. Hope everybody has a champion weekend. Today we took notes on "What is Culture?" for the Writer's Notebook and turned those in. Also, we finished our discussion on the Nacirema article and shared some final thoughts and turned that assignment in. We also got into a seating chart and I did a book check.
