Today your Vista Project Presentation signups went up so students signed up for days to present. I had students get their Battle of the Books teams together and then based the seating chart around those teams. We corrected DOL 2 and read aloud the parody ethnography "Body Ritual Among the Nacirema" by Horace Miner and discussed its interpretation. Finally, we wrote our partner introduction paragraphs in preparation for introductions. MAKE SURE THAT YOU BRING YOUR READING BOOK NEXT TIME AS WE WILL HAVE A BOOK CHECK.

Today we turned in our scavenger hunts and the "All the Books I've Ever Read" Assignment. We took the writing and reading pretest (and you'll need to come in and do this quickly). We did our first DOL of the year on capitalization and proposed our books for first term. Finally, at the end of class, we got with our partners and finished the partner activity we started the first day of class. Be prepared next time to introduce your partner to the class.
If you are in Honors English 11, I told you I would post the AP book list on this blog and that you needed to go off of that list. Here is a link to an article about AP reading and which books you can choose. The link is below. I also told you that I would put up the Vista Project signup list before next class. It's up and students have already signed up for their days. Signup tomorrow asap so you can get a good spot. Today we turned in our disclosure documents and wrote down a list of books you've read recently. I passed back your first writer's notebook and your Term 1 hall passes and we discussed classroom procedures. We talked about Battle of the Books and I passed out that booklet and I talked about Vista Projects (and passed those packets out too). Finally, we took pictures. Remember to print off and complete your scavenger hunt for Monday. You will also need to bring your personal reading book because there will be a book check in class on Monday and you will propose the book you would like to read this term then, as well as your Battle of the Books groups.
Welcome back! It was so good to meet all of you today. I can't wait to get started and hope you have a great experience in English 11 this year. This blog is the place you go to see missing or missed work and print off handouts or homework assignments from the previous day. Today we learned each other's names, did writer's notebook #1 (responding in two paragraphs to the video clip about American stereotypes), and started working on our partner get-to-know activity. Also, I passed out the disclosure document and announced that there will be a quiz next time on the information therein. I've attached your homework assignment below, which is due on Monday the 28th (A) and Tuesday the 29th (B). The directions should be self-explanatory, but let me know if you have any questions. Also, I posted some pictures of things I did over the summer as well as a poem below. If you can come to class and tell me what the last line of the fourth stanza says, I'll give you candy. May the Force be with You. Mr. Gagnier End of Summer by Stanley Horowitz An agitation of the air, A perturbation of the light Admonished me the unloved year Would turn on its hinge that night. I stood in the disenchanted field Amid the stubble and the stones, Amazed, while a small worm lisped to me The song of my marrow-bones. Blue poured into summer blue, A hawk broke from his cloudless tower, The roof of the silo blazed, and I knew That part of my life was over. Already the iron door of the north Clangs open: birds, leaves, snows Order their populations forth, And a cruel wind blows.
