Today we watched a few clips from the most recent Afghan Star competition and discussed how the show (and possibly Afghanistan) has progressed. We then spent the majority of the period in the computer lab. You need to print off your assignment to turn it in on Friday before Spring Break.

We read our personal reading books today and turned in our Afghan Star assignments. We passed out the Literature Circle Packets and browsed the books available to read this term. We checkout out those books and filled out the rest of the Literature Circle roles and pages due. To end class, we did a writer's notebook proposing what activities and culture you'd like to research and complete for the Vista Project this term.
Today we finished Afghan Star and discussed the assignment you'll be creating for that documentary. On the back of your analysis paper, you have a description of the assignment. We got into partners/groups and did a writer's notebook to prewrite for the assignment, writing down the characters we'd like to include, the text type, the argument the characters were going to have, and anything else that might be interesting. We turned in the writer's notebook and will turn in the analysis paper on Wednesday. If you weren't here, make sure that you finish watching the documentary on Youtube. We watched the last 25 minutes today.
Today we watched the documentary "Afghan Star" and filled out an analysis handout of the contestants in the story. The 70 minute documentary is on Youtube. Today I approved books for Term 4, we finished the Canary in a Cage annotation and turned it in, and had the White Helmets discussion. Each group turned in a paper with their thoughts on the questions in the basket before they left. Finally, we talked about the Festival of Colors this Saturday. You can go for extra credit. Day 3: Book check, annotation, and "A canary in a cage" read aloud and discussion (March 16)3/19/2018 Today I checked books to see who had their reading books. I also approved book proposals. We discussed annotation as a class and then I read aloud an excerpt from a book about a teenage girl that was living in Afghanistan when the Taliban took over. You'll turn in the chapter fully annotated next class period.
Today I passed out hall passes and we discussed Vista Projects. Students signed up for Vista Project presentations at the end of class. We finished the rest of the scavenger hunt that we were working on and then we watched a documentary on Netflix about a Syrian rescue team called "The White Helmets." You'll need to figure out a way to watch the documentary on your own and fill out the discussion sheet. For homework, you need to bring your personal reading book to class starting next time. Welcome to 4th Term! I'm so excited to be back. Today we updated our reading logs from the first of the year and wrote down all of the books we've read over the year, including in-class novels, book report books, and Battle of the Books books. We turned those in. We also watched the following video to begin discussing Middle Eastern literature and stereotypes. Your writer's notebook response needs to be two paragraphs. Finally, we went to the library and did a scavenger hunt. You will need to be in the library to complete this activity if you were absent. You can come and get the assignment from me at any time. For homework, you will need to propose your book you'd like to read on the Google Form in the previous post. Again, it's so good to be with you. Mr. Gagnier Welcome back! Just a reminder that you'll want to come here for absent work. Also, all late work, absent, and tardy policies are in effect. I'm so excited for you.
